This city has the distinction of having more visitors than the number of inhabitants it ever had. Gold was discovered during the late 18th century and the town began to attract a heavy influx of hopeful people who became its inhabitants in hope of a more prosperous future. The town suffered its first major jolt when greater reserves of gold were found in the neighboring cities and it began to draw the hopeful inhabitants away from the city. As of 2012, the city is administered by the Bodie foundation, with the tagline protecting future by protecting its past.
